In 1985 Bill Gates Proposed Mac Licensing to Apple

In 1985, AppleMatters carried this story, If the Mac has ever had a bigger fanboy than Bill Gates it is unclear who it was. In the days before the release of the Mac, Microsoft had more people working on software for the Mac than Apple had employees.

Oracle says may launch own Linux version

U.S. software maker Oracle is considering launching a version of the Linux operating system and has looked at buying one of the two firms dominating the technology, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Monday.

The report, citing an interview with Oracle’s chief executive officer, Larry Ellison, said the move would redraw the software landscape and open a new front in Oracle’s long rivalry with U.S. rival Microsoft.

It said Ellison told the newspaper that Oracle wanted to sell a full range of software that, like Microsoft, included both operating system and applications.

“I’d like to have a complete stack,” Ellison was quoted as saying.

“We’re missing an operating system. You could argue that it makes a lot of sense for us to look at distributing and supporting Linux.”
The report said that like IBM, Oracle has counted on Linux–an open-source system whose code is open to anyone to view and adapt–to act as a counterweight to Microsoft’s Windows, which has expanded rapidly from desktop PCs into corporate IT systems.

As part of a recent study of the open-source software market, Ellison told the newspaper, Oracle had considered buying Novell, which after Red Hat is the biggest distributor of Linux.

Firefox Flicks gets a new sponsor ;)

I just saw this on the Firefox Flicks Backstage blog and the given pic rocks :D Nice to see that Microsoft can Sponsor Firefox article :P

News.com is reporting on Flicks. They pulled a nice quote from me (from the press release) that I think really says a lot about how this effort is going. This is really fun!

“We’re very impressed with the videos that have been contributed so far,” Asa Dotzler, Mozilla community coordinator, said in a statement. “Our community is not only producing some great ads, they are also having a lot of fun.”

update: and now they’ve added the videos to the article. Nice of them to do that. Even nicer to see that our ads have a new sponsor ;-)

AMD Quietly Intros 3.0GHz Opteron Processors.

More than three years after rival Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices has managed to launch processors that officially work at 3.0GHz clock-speed, a landmark speed-bin. While performance-wise such chips are much faster compared to central processing units (CPUs) from Intel at the same frequency, AMD does not advertise the achievement, as the main focus now is on dual-core processors.AMD has quietly added AMD Opteron models 256 and 856 processors for 2-way and 8-way systems into its price-list without even publishing a press release on the matter. The chips are made using 90nm process technology, operate at 3.0GHz, sport 1MB L2 cache and integrated dual-channel PC3200 memory controller with ECC support. The new chips are likely to be drop-in compatible with existing Socket 940 infrastructure and have thermal design power of around 95W.

While 3.0GHz is certainly a milestone for AMD, the accomplishment is not publicized any significantly, as the corner-stone of AMD’s current focus are dual-core and multi-core microprocessors, not just boosted clock-speeds of single-core CPUs. For instance, maximum clock-speed of AMD desktop single-core processors is 2.80GHz now and it is unlikely to rise from there until dual-core chips hit the speed-bin.

AMD Opteron models 256 and 856 cost $851 and $1514 in 1000-unit quantities. It is unclear which server and workstation builders will use the new AMD Opteron processors.

YouTube clip ‘Breakup’ showcases visual effects

Video effects by Logitech, the digital toolmaker, are receiving quite a viral marketing boost from YouTube.com and a quirky home movie produced by a 17-year-old girl.

Breakup” was the third most-watched clip Wednesday on video-upload site YouTube, one of the Internet’s fastest growing Web sites. The 75-second clip, which has generated more than 100,000 page views in two days, is little more than a young girl discussing a recent breakup with her boyfriend.

As “Bowiechick,” a YouTube username, discusses her plight, she switches with a click of a button between visual effects. One minute, she appears to be wearing glasses, the next minute it looks as if she put on a gas mask. At one point, she dons feline eyes and nose.

Of the more than 600 comments posted about “Breakup” on YouTube, dozens were requests for information on how the effects were created. “Wow, what movie maker is that?” asked one of Bowiechick’s fans. “Sorry about your break up.”

Bowiechick didn’t respond to interview requests by CNET News.com. But in her YouTube profile, she writes that she shot her video with Logitech’s Quickcam Orbit MP, which Amazon.com offers for $104.

Nancy Morrison, a Logitech spokeswoman, said software called Logitec Video Effects is behind the nifty images. The software, which the company launched last August, features animated avatars that can make a user look like a Martian, a Great White shark, or Santa Clause. The software tracks a user’s face and stay in position even when the user moves, says Morrison.

“The software maps to about 16 points on your face,” Morrison said. “When you turn your head, the effects turn with you.”

Logitech offers almost 100 different avatars and all are available for download at Logitech.com . Four of the company’s Web cameras: QuickCam Fusion, QuickCam for Notebooks Pro and QuickCam Pro 5000, come equipped with the software.

While it’s too early to tell whether Bowiechick has impacted Logitec sales, it’s plain that many more people are aware of the company’s visual graphics as a result of her video. Though only a teenager, Bowiechick may be an expert in the practice of “viral marketing,” where companies try to exploit online social networks to create brand awareness.

“That was really funny,” wrote one Bowiechick fan. “I wish I had a webcam cool enough to make me a kitty.”

Vulnerability in Gmail

I was recently attempting to mail some javascript code from my yahoo account to my gmail when I came across this vulnerability.

Apparently javascript will run if it is withing the preview of the message.

I only tested this sending from a yahoo account. Sending gmail to gmail appears to filter this out.

This is what the message has to compose of

* A short subject to increase the ammount of code to run

* A short bit of text in the body so that the code isn’t treated as quoted text

* And your code

My simple test was : Subject: a Body: asdfasdf<script>alert(”asdF”);</script>

Here is a screen: http://www.ipnow.org/vulnerability.png

This vulnerability could be used to gather email addresses. Or even possibly to compromise the account.

A 14 year old, Anthony discovered this vulnerability. Right now this has been fixed by Google but no statement has been issued by them regarding this.

Google Video Charging Admission For TV Ads

To heap on one more thing to screw with your head this Friday, Google is selling vintage commercials through its Google Video search. You heard right, if you want to view the commercial, you’ll have to pay a dollar. Anybody else hear Gabriel’s trumpet?

Just a few weeks ago advertisers paid $2.5 million for a 30-second ad on the Super Bowl. Looks like some are trying to make that money back. Granted the commercials for sale through Google Video are vintage-commercials we knew and loved as kids-but some of these companies are still around.

Hang on. Let’s talk about the cool changes to Google Video and then get back to this. Google has added category tags-very YouTube-esque. This must have been what Larry Page was yelling about. Searchers who just want to browse videos can do so with the help of tags marked “Popular,” “Animation,” and “Educational,” among others. Sweet.

Google Release Free Website Service

Google Pages

Google have launched Google Page Creator, a free website creation tool.

Perhaps best described as Geocities for the 21st century, Page Creator takes the Google AJAX magic and applies it to website design. The process is simple, albeit, at this time, a little buggy.

In a fashion remarkably similar to Powerpoint, users can pick from a number of themes (or change them on the go) and text layouts. It makes use of a rather clever What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editor, so users don’t have to face the prospect of editing HTML (but the option exists). Best of all, in true ground breaking fashion, Google lets you have 100MB of space for free, and it doesn’t even put ads on your homepage.

It’s all very easy; of course, that’s the idea. Google have identified an area of the web which has garnered little interest in the last few years. “Free” providers traditionally have provided a lack lustre offering designed to try and persuade people to go up to pay-for options. No longer. Google Pages sees the company delve into a natural but new field, and will no doubt be popular.

Google Admits Desktop Security Risk

Businesses have been warned by research company Gartner that the latest Google Desktop Beta has an “unacceptable security risk,” and Google agrees.

On Feb. 9, Google unveiled Google Desktop 3, a free, downloadable program that includes an option to let users search across multiple computers for files. To do that, the application automatically stores copies of files, for up to a month, on Google servers. From there, copies are transferred to the user’s other computers for archiving. The data is encrypted in transmission and while stored on Google servers.
